As part of the preliminary task I was to produce a front cover magazine which could either be a school magazine or college magazine. I chosen a college magazine to do as I thought it would be easier for me as I could relate ideas to the magazine as the target audience relates to college students like myself. As this is the front cover college magazine I have created.

The genre of the magazine is a college magazine to help the target audience identify this, I thought of what the content would be placed on the magazine and the main image. The target audience is aimed at students of the age of 16-18 both male and female as students that attend colleges are both genders to show this the content through the straplines used help to relate to both female and male students for example 'tips on how to prepare for a interview' as both female and male students may have to go to a interview in the near future if they do. To help my magazine challenge the conventions of real college magazines, I thought of the design principles that will help my magazine look professional and look like a real college magazines that are similar to mine. First I thought what is the most important element that should be the first prominent and main focus, as i thought the main image is as it is the most important as this helps the audience understand the story behind the image from the conventions placed on the magazine, but also the kicker is the most prominent of ‘Are you thinking about going to university as the kicker anchors the main image. The main image is a student at the college studying but also thinking about future prospects which could involve further prospects as the kicker shows this. The main image relates to the college genre as the student is studying, as this helps to represent a particular social group which are students at college, as this is what generally students do during their college life which is studying, which relates to the main image. The main image is framed at the centre of the magazine as the aim of this is I want the audience main focus is to be on the main image and what it shows. When I was taking the image I had to consider the mise en scene and how I can relate and aim to focus on the genre of the magazine. As I thought of the costume used as the student is dressed casually and smartly as this helps portray the atmosphere and setting the student is in. The students makeup is not heavily made up as again there is a place for this but as she is in a college here makeup look natural as she is at a college where she needs to represent herself to others, where she is at and also make her look presentable for the college. The props used are her headband and jewellery as this helps go with the costume. The mise en scene that is encoded through the use of setting is set in a library as this helps to signify the genre of the magazine, and also the content of the magazine of studying, as college mostly revolves around this.

The camera shot taken of my main image is a medium shot as this helps show what the content of the magazine will be about and also through the mise en scene for example acting also helps show what the genre of magazine may be about. The colours used are ‘red’ and ‘white.’ This helps to contribute to the mood of the image by ‘red’ which refers to the sixth form or college is a time where you can have fun however the use of colour of white connotes being a natural at college and the work you do comes from students and its naturally from students as the work they put in all comes from themsleves but also the white signifies ‘paper’ which is the work you do and you put on paper and work hard likewise on the main image as the student is working hard on paper as the colours contribute to the main image and props used of the paper. My masthead is called ‘Lordswood Livin It!’ as this reflects the target audience as ‘Lordswood’ is a college which students attend which there is so much going on and students will enjoy and have a good time at and also the use of ‘Livin It’ also connotes that the students almost live in the college, as they study at Lordswood and the students are the people who make the college. The use of colour ‘red’ connotes love and having a time where you love and a place of fun and holds many things you can do there for college students.

Through the copy I have used persuasive techniques to interest the target audience. As I have used alliteration for example on the masthead ‘Lordswood Livin’ The typeface used on the masthead is big bold and is the biggest copy on the magazine as this helps the audience recognize what the magazine is called. The magazine also has a clear balance of a clear layout as the straplines are poisoned on both sides of the main image as the alignment used helps to visually connect the elements on the page as the straplines anchor the main image, for example the straplines I have chosen which i have considered the aspects and importance to a good career and elements that may be considered throughout college life. The copy used is bold and follows the typeface throughout the front cover magazine as it looks more professional and easier for the audience to follow. As the date and website is placed under the masthead which the audience can quickly glance at, and also the ear as it helps to partly interest the reader as the magazine is free this will also help to do this. The straplines are on each side of the main image and the use of the same font and size as this signifies that each strapline are important to each other as what the information holds on each strapline. ‘Do you want to be the next college council?’ and ‘Connexions CV advice’ and with the straplines I have tried to use persuasive techniques to help interest the reader with the use of alliteration, rhetorical questions and commandments for instance ‘put your thinking caps on’ as this particular strapline anchors the question marks that the student is thinking about which this also is targeted at the target audience. The use of question marks used on the magazine is also to link the main image as the meaning to this is that the main image is thinking about her future prospects which anchors the kicker but also the important elements that helps you to a career or job but also things that help students could consider that can make them successful through college and life which this also anchors some of the straplines on the front cover. The magazine is free as it’s a college magazine and it will be normally be seen at a college therefore its free as also this will helps more students to look at the magazine, and also consider ideas that are within the magazine as my aim is for students to use the information that is in the magazine in helping them with their time at college. The purpose of the ear being on the magazine and the copy placed on their which is ‘free’ is to make it eye catching to the readers and also pick up this magazine as it’s free.

The flow of the magazine and the visual movement of my magazine is that I would want viewers eye to follow from the ear as they know the magazine is free therefore there more likely to pick it up. Then to the main image as this is to show the target audience of the magazine and also help show the genre of the magazine. To the kicker as the kicker anchors the main image. Then to the masthead to the straplines on the magazine. There is two layers used on the magazine which are the setting and the main image. Then the copy placed on the magazine.

I had also created a content page that follows from my front cover college magazine. A content page conventionally shows what will contain inside the magazine which is referenced with page numbers.

I wanted my magazine to easily follow from my target audeince from the front cover magazine to help me to this I followed the same font which used in balck and red that follows the same colour scheme from the masthead. I used only one colour for the font which was ‘red’ as I wanted to make it simple and precise as the aim of a content page is to do this as I also kept it precise by a heading of what the theme of the page is about as I made the font red and bold to stand out and show this, and a precise idea what will the title of each page will be about i.e. 'find out what the month holds for you' which is red but not bold as the reader can easily identify each title that is anchored by a small amount of information. However the page number has also a different font on the side, each heading as the effect of this is that the audience can easily find what page the heading is if they specifically wanted to find the page number and heading. The content list has been placed as a list as generically content pages normally have a list layout which follows a list as it looks more professional and also looks like a real content page.

I have also added a picture on the content page as the image follows the main image on the front cover of the magazine is with the same student. Through the mise en scene the costume of the main image on the front cover is the same on the content page. The student looks formal and smart. The use of medium side shot used and the props used of a open book is the idea of this is to signify that what the inside of the magazine will contain and the use of acting of the main image of the student looking up at the content is that this helps to interest the audience, as it seems like the student is interested in what the magazine contains but also the use of the student looking up helps to emphasises to also look at the content page as the main image helps to be a role model for other students in how they should react to the content page. Also the use of a prop of the book used reflects the setting of the content page and follows from the front cover magazine of the use of setting of the library, but also with the grey setting as also the props used of the book as the setting is also followed from the front page of the library but in another area of the library, and also the books used in the front cover on either side of the main image reflects and follows the content page. This shows that the student is interested in her studies as this can be shown in the content page with the book open showing she’s interested in the magazine and what’s inside of the magazine as this can help her through her studies and life at college . As this is my aim for college students to beleive when looking at teh content page as this is the point of how my magazine is deigned and created. The setting of the content page of the library is how the library looks like which makes it easier for the reader to identify.

The flow of the content of the magazine and visual and verbal path of movement that the viewers eye follows through the page is from the title ‘content’ as this helps the audience identify what the page holds to the content list to the main image as it helps, the audience to look again at the content from looking at the student looking up.

Keisha Cole looks fashionable and the use of makeup used helps to portray this as she looks heavily made up and also through the use of costume as she is wearing a leopard print dress which reflects the repetition of colour on the straplines which are black and brown as the use of repetition helps establish unified cohesive design but also the use of colours also goes well with the magazine, but also the use of makeup of the brown eye shadow also helps to how this.. Also the use of props used which is shown through the use of jewellery of black and gold relates to the font colours used as straplines on the magazine and also the use of white earrings helps anchors the colour of the masthead and some of the straplines on the page that are the same colour for example ‘Jet’ and ‘singer keeps it real about her families business and her interest’. The straplines on the magazine are on the left side of the magazine and typeface used is bold as this also helps the audience identify what the straplines are next to the main image this connotes that the main image is the main focus although the straplines are important the layout of the magazine is that the main image and straplines are almost separated as this helps the target audience to simply understand the magazine. The website and barcode are also placed at the bottom of the magazine this shows.. To help to interest the reader there is also a rhetorical question used ‘whatever happened…. Repaul? This helps to involve and hook the reader. The magazine consists of three layers. The layers are the background and the main image then the masthead and straplines and copy.

The visual and verbal path of movement that the reader’s eye follows through the page of the ‘Jet’ magazine of which is the main conventions on the magazine is the main image to the main strapline that anchors the image to the masthead. The magazine consists of four layers used on this particualr magazine which is the background then the mastahead to the main image then the main straplines. The issue number, barcode and date are written in smaller fonts and are placed in the corner. These are key conventions for a magazine and are mainly used to purchasing reasons

To help me create my own College magazine front cover I looked at various college magazines that were designed by last year 12 this helped me show an insight of how college magazines can look like. As you can see above I have analysed the front cover magazines to show the conventions that are placed on the magazine and how affective they are. The magazines above are college magazines however specifically a media college magazine.

The ‘Lordswood’ magazine is a media magazine as this can be shown through the main image and through is also encoded through the mise en scene used of the camera being a prop. The target audience of the magazine is for college students from the age of ’16-18’ students. This can also be shown through the main image of a female student who the reader presumes is at college or belongs to ‘Lordswood’ sixth form centre as the masthead shows the name of the college.

The use of mise en scene with the costume that the main image is wearing is very casually dressed. The props used of the camera signify or helps to show the genre of the magazine or elements shown of a media magazine. The masthead of the magazine is ‘Lordswood’ which is a sixth form centre as said before the main image may relate to the name of the masthead. There is also a kicker placed on the magazine ‘Exclusive students interviewed sixth formers tell all!!’ the use of the kicker I believe does not anchor the main image which the purpose of the kicker is normally to anchor the main image, and is the main importance of the whole front cover of the magazine however this is not shown as the main image is of a young female student, the use of acting of her making eye contact with the camera suggests the importance of the magazine is on the media aspects which I believe the kicker would have been suitable for a media theme that related to main image. The use of straplines helps to interest the reader through the competition which helps to hook the reader. Also the magazine is free which there is no purchase that has to be made by the audience. The typeface used is limited as only one font is used which helps to interest the reader as there’s not a lot going on the page to confuse the reader in any way and also help to convey the main images importance. The is also a skyline placed on the magazine which contains the date and through the skyline helps the reader know what type of genre the magazine is. there is also visual straplines used which looks affective and eye catching but do not anchor the main image or any straplines on the front cover of the magazine.

I have also annotated two other college magazines showing the conventions on the magazines and also my opinions on how affective the conventions are for the magazine. By annotating different college magazine helps me identify trends on what is typically on a front cover of college magazine and how the layout is like which helps me identify how my magazine could include and how the layout could be like which analysing college magazines helps me design my own college magazine.

This is a mock up of how my college magazine front cover will include and look like. It’s very precise to show the conventions that will be placed on the magazine. As you can see the masthead will be placed at the left corner of the magazine. Also a website will be on the magazine so students will have other ways in which students will be able to interact with the college and know more about it. I have also placed a date on the magazine which is placed on top of the website although i have not included this on my mock up as i decided after my mock up to place a date on the magazine. There will also be an ear used to show that the magazine is free. The main image will anchor the genre of the magazine which will be a college magazine. The main image will also anchor the kicker as the main image will be of a student working hard and thinking about there career path. There will also be straplines that will be included on the front cover magazine which will be precise and short as the main image is the main focus. The use of straplines will contain information which will anchor the main image, and the main genre of the magazine. The setting will be at the library which helps to portray the theme of a college magazine.

I have also created a mock up of my content page of my college magazine that will go follow my magazine front cover. To help me easily follow the front page to the content page more easily and for the target audience. My masthead will be ‘contents…’ as this will help the audience easily identify what the theme of the page is all about. However my masthead on the mock up has changed from Lordswood livin it to contents as I thought it would be easily be identified by students what there will be on the page and is about. My content listing will be listed in rows with page numbers which students can go to a specific page they want to go on. The content listing will include the information covered on the straplines on the front cover and as well as information that will be suitable for this particular college magazine. The background of the content page will follow from the front cover of the magazine which will be the library. The main image will also follow from the front cover of a student however looking at the contents, as if she is interested to what the magazine will contain and also the main image will also be holding a book as a prop. This will help to signify that the student is educated and her work is important as well as what is included on the content page.

The rule of thirds helps to produce images more effectively and pleasing and professional. using the rule of thirds helps produce nicley balanced easy on the eye pictures. The imagainary line are drawn dividing the image into thrids both horizontly and vertically, you place the important elements of your composion where these lines intersect as shown in the diaram above.

The Rule of Thirds is probably one of the cardinal rules of composition. Mentally divide your viewfinder or LCD screen into thirds, using two vertical and two horizontal lines to create nine smaller rectangles and four points where the lines intersect. It has been repeatedly shown that by placing objects over these intersections, a pleasing and balanced arrangement often results, whether the composition is horizontal or vertical. When an image's center of interest is placed at one of these intersections, balance in the picture can often be achieved by placing a secondary object known as a counterpoint at the opposing intersection.

Masthead
The masthead strapline is small and bold however the name of the magazine is almost like lady gaga is controlling the magazine as the masthead is on her which connotes the main focus is on the main image and also the strapline also it is big and bold which is in your face and the colour used also emphsises this as its bright which grabs the readers attention also the mood of the image which shows she is colourful and happy.

Straplines
The use of copy of the straplines are on each side of the main image are bold and small which connotes the main focus is on the main image although the straplines are important however its still noticable the straplines however the main focus is on the main image, also the use of colour on the straplines makes the magazine stand out and the masthead and straplines are all the same colour which is yellow. The main cover line is bold and yellow and it stands out from the rest of the straplines as this anchors the main image and the main image is a close up shot and it the audiences face likewise the main cover line strapline is. Beneath the main cover line is ‘were just living in it’ this connotes that lady gaga is almost created the magazine and the readers are living In it opposeley by reading this the use of there involves the readers. The other straplines are girly to attract others.

Main image
The image looks like lady gaga looking sopfisticated and there is a medium close up of gaga has the strapline ‘its lady gaga stand’ the anchors the main image almost of the magazine is focused on her as the idea suggests behind this is that its lady gages and the use of mise en scene encoded through the costume which lady gaga is wearing a jacket which shows how gaga dresses everyday life or in her videos which the reader is familiar with but also it is fashionable and feminie with the use of pink. Also the use of props used with the glasses suggests that gaga is uniqiue and also this goes well with the costume she has on. The lighting used is almost on Ladt Gaga as the main focus is on the main image and this helps the reader focus on the main image by this. The makeup used on the main image is heavy as this connmots that the main image is fashionable and this fits in with the costume. The main image also helps to realte to the music genre which Lady Gaga is a pop singer which connotes the music genre is a pop magazine. The main image helps to relate to the target audeince its a young female artist which shows its a women maagzine.

The isse number, bar code and date are written in smaller fonts and are placed in the corner. These are key conventions for a magazine and are mainly used to purchasing reasons . The layers used on this 'V' magazine are it consists of four layers which are the background followed by the main image followed by the mastahead which is place on the main images face then the props used of the glasses that is placed on top of the mastahead followed by the straplines on both sides of the main image.

From the research and my analysing the pop magazines I created my own magazine using as many conventions to attract the audience which my magazine is called sound as shown below.

Masthead
Sound is bold and black to help to stand out for impact as it connotes it’s a music magazine. also the use of ‘pink’ in the background and font suggest it’s a pop magazine and through the use of flowers in the masthead.

Skyline
‘sales now on’ as the economy is right now and the recession we have I thought using this will attract the audience to go to the sale as its cheap for them as well as buying the books visiting the music store also broadens the readers to have a bigger interest in music buy vitsing a music store.

Main image
